I'm not a warrior, or a hero. I'm just someone trying to get by in life, and right now that means hunting Necromancers.
— Lucan to Niika

Lucan is a criminal living in the kingdom of Felden. He was first introduced in Episode 2 when he was sent from prison to mining duty. There he saw many undead inside the mining area. He is the protagonist of the Felden Arc.

Lore[]

Lucan, before his introduction, is said to have been involved in petty crime and thievery. Not much else is known about his backstory. He is one of the three main characters of the Songs of War.

Appearances[]

Season 1[]

Episode 2[]

Lucan meets with Marcus, a warden at the Riverstead prison where he is being held. For being an obedient prisoner and committing only minor crimes, Lucan is told that his release would be accelerated. Much to his dismay, however, he is assigned mining duty near Felden's Basalt Coast, partially due to an arising shortage of resources. He also includes that there will be a guard to protect the miners from the undead, but Lucan continues to steal Marcus's cake and angrily leaves.

Episode 3[]

Still annoyed, Lucan arrives at the Basalt Mines. There, he meets Eddy, his guard and a heavy drinker, who is there to introduce him to mining duty. Soon after the two enter the mine, Lucan finds a wither skull, Eddy gets pushed off of the scaffholding and gets knocked out in an attack from the undead, and Lucan escapes back to Riverstead, badly injured. After recovering, he is questioned by officials from the government of Felden who decide that Lucan's near-fatal encounter with the undead align with reports of Necromancers controlling the undead. His assignment is revised: instead of mining duty, Lucan is now tasked with investigating and reporting information about the necromancers back to Felden.

Episode 4[]

Now assigned to track the Necromancers, Lucan heads into the Felden jungle and starts a small camp with rotten flesh on a spit roast to attract necromancers. He is attacked by Niika, who thinks he is a necromancer due to the rotten flesh cooking. After she realises he isn't, the undead and a necromancer arrive and Niika runs off to her base, only to be followed by Lucan. He stays the night there and proposes an alliance for both of their benefit, to which Niika reluctantly agrees.

Episode 5[]

Lucan is once again sitting by a campfire, waiting for the Necromancer to come out of hiding to attack him. When zombies first come out, Lucan grabs his sword and kills a zombie. A small skirmish against the Necromancer’s forces occurs with Niika's help. After Niika knocks the Necromancer unconscious, Lucan disguises himself as the Necromancer using his robes. Lucan then enters the Necromancers' Cave near Mt. Tempus, after telling Niika to bring the Necromancer to the Riverstead Prison. He is unwilling to tell her that he is a criminal.

Episode 6[]

Disguised as a Necromancer, Lucan encounters a group of undead that surrounds him. He takes out his wither skull, but only manages to delay them until an actual Necromancer arrives to control them. The Necromancer acknowledges that the person Lucan's disguised as failed his mission and comments that the Felina was more dangerous than expected. Lucan responds with grunts. The Necromancer brings Lucan to the heart of the cave, where other Necromancers, including the Necrolord, are present. Lucan is then called to join another group of Necromancers on a new mission.

Episode 7[]

Lucan is on a mission with the Necromancers to burn down Niika's treefort, but his reluctance causes him to be revealed as a traitor. Xaria starts burning down the treefort, but Niika jumps down to fight him. After almost mistaking Lucan for a necromancer again, Xaria retreats. Niika tries to retrieve her information from the treefort, but Lucan pulls her down, implying they have no time. She tells Lucan she can't swim and that she hates water, but Lucan pushes her in anyways. Across the river, they have a discussion of necromancer information. Niika tells Lucan that she will accompany him to report to the Felden Officials about the Necromancers because they might her information and Lucan might need her help again.

Episode 8[]

Lucan reports the Necromancer base and plot to the Felden Officials and is instructed to bring instructions to Fort Zuka. Lucan and Niika have a conversation about the uncertainty of what they will do in the future. Lucan is greeted by Alec and led to Captain Kiyoshi, to whom he gives the orders. Lucan is ordered to team with Kiyoshi in the attack. Although surprised at first, Lucan still accepts his new mission.

Episode 9[]

Lucan is shown at the Mahoa Docks in the opening of Episode 9, sitting at the edge of a pier. Niika comes up from behind and says she'd feel better if he didn't sit so close to the edge. Lucan obliges, and the two settle down to converse. Lucan reveals that he had a tendacy to get into trouble, thus getting himself into jail, and that he couldn't see himself working a normal job for the rest of his life. Niika agrees with him empathetically and says she had never fit in society herself. The two are abruptly interrupted by Captain Kiyoshi, who tells Lucan that they were ready to sail. The two exchange a brief farewell and go their separate ways. Lucan boards the ship with Kiyoshi, while Niika watches the fleet depart from the pier.

Episode 10[]

Lucan arrives with the army at the Necrobase and leads them into the lair, only to realize they had arrived too late. They hurry back to Felden to find the city ablaze. Lucan reunites with Niika and they watch the burning ruins together with Alec and Kiyoshi on a hill. This was the act that thus lead to the Felden-Necromancer War.

Season 2[]

Episode 11[]

We return to the Felden arc where Lucan, Kiyoshi and Niika as well as other soldiers try and defend against the undead in Fort Zuka, Kiyoshi unwilling to let up the strategic fort. Niika explains that she found the Necrolord and goes to try and retrieve his staff, against the will of Kiyoshi, since they realize that's what he controls the undead with. She runs off and Kiyoshi runs to protect the front gates.

Episode 12[]

Back at Fort Zuka, Lucan, Kiyoshi and the other Felden troops breach the front gates, and spread across the city, looking for tunnel breaches, Lucan looking for Niika. She drops down from a ledge, and Lucan realizes something is wrong. They fight, and Lucan falls to the ground, unwilling to hurt her. She almost kills him but Kiyoshi interferes. They fight, and Niika retreats. They return to Fort Zuka where a few tents are set up, and Kiyoshi is debriefing the battle. He explains that Fort Zuka has been lost, but since the Necromancers are heading to Ferndale through the tunnels they have time to prepare. He also states that Northwind is sending a Chronicler to write about the situation, in case this war goes on the Walls of Time. He assigns Lucan to watch over her, insulting him by saying that she is a Felina so he should be happy. Lucan is angry, and starts to fight Kiyoshi, who overpowers him easily. He then leaves to the other kingdoms to get reinforcements.

Episode 14[]

Lucan wearing his Necromancer robes at a temporary base of theirs, guarded by zombies. However, he uses the Wither skeleton skull and subdues the zombies the way he saw Xaria do it in Episode 7. He then enters the gateway.

Episode 15[]

Cuts to the Necromancers, who have set up a temporary base underground. Xaria brings all the prisoners from Fort Zuka in front of the Necrolord. He orders to have all of them fed to the zombies except for Marcus, who is spared for his knowledge, which however doesn't save him from being brainwashed and turned into Necrolord's servant by the Necrostaff. As Lucan sees this, he also notices brainwashed Niika, who is, same as all the Undead, entranced by the staff. He tries to wake her up but to no avail. As the Necrolord gives Xaria the order of preparing his armies he notices Lucan, who has been listening the whole time, but walks away without taking any action.

Episode 17[]

Lucan comes out of bushes and informs Alec, that the Necromancers have set up a trick and aren't attacking Ferndale, but are instead going straight for Felora, the capital city of Felden, who in turn informs Kiyoshi. He thinks hard about whether or not it could be true, but eventually decides to pack things up and ride to Felora immediately.

Episode 18[]

Lucan reveals that he's still dressed as a Necromancer and in the Necrolord's escort. He kills the rest of it, excluding Niika, and jumps to Kiyoshi's side, saying that they can talk about their punishment later. Kiyoshi fights the Necrolord, while Lucan fights Niika. Niika is clearly a better fighter than Lucan, but Lucan tricks her into thinking he's going to admit he loves her, but instead says that she needs to learn how to swim and along with her jumps into the water below. They both go onto the shoreline, Niika no longer being brainwashed, but are quickly cornered by the Necromancers and the Undead. Cuts to a forest outside of Felora, the prisoners, including Lucan and Niika, are being rounded up. The Necromancers also bring the officials, who say, that they can't enslave them, because they're official council members of Felden. The Necrolord responds, that there's no more Felden and orders the Undead to kill them. He turns his attention to Lucan and Niika, who hold hands, knowing they're going to die. The Necrolord raises his staff towards Lucan and Niika, but nothing happens. They all look around and on top of a hill, see a Wither, with Pythus and the Angel of Death beneath them.

They also see a few Withers flying overhead.

Season 3[]

Episode 21[]

Cuts to Felden, Lucan and Niika are watching a convoy of Wither skeletons escorting Humans into Felora. Lucan says, that they could get the people from Felora through the uncharted Necromancer tunnels, but Niika says, that it would be impossible to evacuate the entire city without noticing the Nether. Just then, Denny on top of Thunderdome flies in, drops the Nether star and Niika catches it, Lucan saying, that that is their way out.

Episode 23[]

Lucan and Niika get caught up in the retreat and beam away as well.

Episode 24[]

Cuts to Meridian docks, Lucan and Niika are getting in a boat, intending to sail to Felden. Niika, because of being a Felina, fears of water and thus feels uneasy on the boat, but Lucan assures her, that she'll have a plenty of time, until they reach Felden, to overcome her fear of the ocean. The former asks, if they are there yet and the latter jokingly says, that they're closer, than they were five minutes ago, which irritates Niika. After a small montage of them travelling, Niika suggests a rebellion against the Nether from within Felden with the people, that live in and know Felden and Lucan agrees. The episode ends with Niika leaning on Lucan's shoulder and telling him to wake her up when they get there, as they sail into the sunset.

Episode 26[]

The episode begins with Lucan and Niika arriving to Felora, trying to blend in. They see some person getting harassed by two Wither skeletons, but can't intervene yet, and so they move on. A masked figure throws a sword at one of the skeletons and the other one turns and sees Lucan and Niika watching. He runs after them, but the hooded figure pulls them aside, holds them until the skeleton passes. He then reveals that he is actually Alec. Lucan asks him if he will join a rebellion they're planning, and he says, that he keeps telling everyone a resistance would only put everyone at risk, but if they mean it seriously, they can go to the Shadow. They go to the Sunset Topiary, where Alec had directed them, and meet Nitsuke the Chronicler. They say, that they're looking for the Shadow and Nitsuke slowly starts to tease, that she is actually the Shadow, but the two don't get it and so she tells it straight. They introduce themself and Lucan realizes, she's the Chronicler he was supposed to escort. Niika says, that she thought it was forbidden for Chroniclers to take sides and Nitsuke says that's correct, but that nowhere does it say, that they can't provide people with a list of names. They ask what list of names and she says, a list of names who would be useful in a rebellion, and that this way, she would still be neutral. Lucan asks where to go then and Nitsuke gestures for them to follow her. Back at Felora, Marcus, the Riverstead warden, walks into a bakery and orders some food, but the baker says, that they are out of stock. Lucan says, that he can take a slice of his and they have a friendly reunion. As there are two Wither skeletons, they come outside. Lucan says, that they heard the Nether is putting him to work by melting weapons and tools and that they are going to need those weapons. Marcus complies and they walk off. Suddenly, Skorch begins walking towards them. It appears they made it, but Skorch grabs Niika by her foot and holds her over the edge and Lucan by his throat. He says he hasn't seen them before and that, if he sees them together again, he will kill them. In the bakery, the baker is held against the counter by the Wither skeletons. Skorch interogates him and the baker says, that he doesn't know anything, except that they call him the Shadow. Skorch asks if they recruited him, to which he responds that no, but the guy that was just there recruited one of his customers. Skorch only says interesting and kills him.

Episode 27[]

In Felora, Lucan and Niika are walking through it, talking about their encounter with Skorch. They come into a house and Lucan trips over a glass bottle and find Eddy alive sleeping. After he awakens, he reveals, that after the fall, he fell unconscious. After he awakened, he went to Felora, but must have taken a wrong turn and ended up in Azilton. The flashback gets weird as he says, that he defended the city with a help of a snowman army. Lucan asks Eddy about the rebellion and Eddy says of course. They go away, but Skorch is revealed to be watching. They head into another building and find a Necromancer, Xaria. Though Niika is very clearly against working with him, Lucan is okay with it. She asks Xaria, why does he want to help Felden, if he wanted to destroy it, and he says that the Nether killed his lord and everything he stood for. That Xan Voltaris recruited people like himself - without land, wealth or family and that they can't blame them for seizing such an opportunity. Niika asks, what will happen after they're done then and he says, that he came from nothing and that he will return to nothing. After they leave, Skorch comes in and wants Xaria to talk. He says, that he's been following the two for a while and learned, that the Shadow is Nitsuke. As he says this, Xaria throws down a Wither skull, which creates a smoke, that allows Xaria to run away.

Episode 28[]

At Felora, Wither skeletons barge into Nitsuke's office and she is taken to the Felora hanging courtyard. Skorch almost executes her, but Niika fires an arrow which hits his hand, causing him to stagger with his sword. Lucan jumps from the crowd, grabs Nitsuke and jumps with her to the side. Suddenly, few archers start firing arrows at Skorch. He kills a few of them, but Alec jumps in and starts fighting him. The Wither almost attacks Lucan and Nitsuke but Xaria, sword and Necrostaff drawn, distracts it. It fires a shot at him, but he evades and several archers start firing at it. Alec, despite his best efforts to keep him occupied, is no match for Skorch and he kills him. Lucan is ushering people through the Necromancer tunnels as Skorch jumps in and he starts fighting him. The Wither kills many of the archers and starts pursuing Xaria. Niika gets a good opportunity to fire at it, but sees Lucan fighting Skorch and goes there instead. Eddy fights the Wither skeletons, while drinking simultaneously, and then throws the empty bottle at them. Back with Lucan and Skorch, the former is doing a lot of street-fighting moves, but is overpowered nonetheless. Skorch badly slices Lucan on his leg and almost kills him, but Niika steps in and fights Skorch as well. Xaria is hit by the Wither and falls a bit while losing the Necrostaff. Skorch hits Niika in the face and her ears start ringing. Lucan staggers up, but falls back down because of his injury. Skorch laughs and, as the two hold hands once more, prepares to kill them, but an arrow hits him in the back. He turns around, confused, and sees Nitsuke holding a bow and falls to the ground dead afterwards. The Wither starts flying down there, but Xaria jumps from a nearby bridge, mid-air cuts off the Wither's middle head and lands on another bridge, as the Wither falls down, dead. As Wither skeletons start to go after him, he runs to a Necromancer tunnel, picking up the Necrostaff while running. When he gets there, he raises the Necrostaff and lights up a torch, revealing a huge army of the Undead behind him. Cuts to later, the Nether already defeated. The surviving characters meet up and talk about Lucan's injury. Marcus decides that they should send messenger birds to the other capitals saying the Nether can be beaten. Nitsuke comes in, Lucan thanks them for saving their lives and she says that if being a perfect Chronicler means she can't help people in need, she'll risk the consequences. After they start walking off, Xaria approaches Niika and says that the Necromancers are no more while handing the Necrostaff over to Niika and walks away. They both smile, realizing the mission to destroy the Necromancers is finally over, and hobble off as well.

Episode 30[]

We see Lucan leading Niika, who has closed eyes, to a surprise. The surprise is a newly built tree fort, just as Niika always wanted. She kisses Lucan for the first time, saying that she loves it, and hurries to it. He says that he thought they were going to eat first, but Niika shows the cake she stole from him. She says that she will race him to the top and he says that it's not nice to make fun of the handicap and walks up the stairs. Merlin flies in and informs them about the ceremony, but Lucan says they'll pass. After giving Merlin some seeds, he sees Niika sitting on the edge and sits next to her. She says, that she thought he couldn't see himself settling down and he says, that at least not alone.

Trivia[]

  • At the beginning of Episode 3, Eddy offers Lucan a potato, but Lucan declines, saying that he ate on his way from Riverstead to the mines. This meal is very likely to have been Marcus's cake.
  • A few minutes after, when he and Eddy was entering below the Mines, Lucan told the quote "I've got a bad feeling about this" from the Star Wars saga.
  • Stephen J. Pena, who did the voice for Lucan, also did the voice for the Necromancer in Episode 5.
  • Based on his attitude towards Niika, Lucan is commonly shipped with her. Many fans predict that the two might develop a romance in the future. This was proven true, due to the fact that they kissed during Episode 30.
